Ben Mitchell (*1976) is a freelance type designer based in Brighton, UK. After completing his MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading in 2012, he has been collaborating on Latin and non-Latin projects as a designer, consultant and teacher.
Ben specialises in the scripts of Southeast Asia, having lived in Thailand from 2002 to 2006 and now continuing to make frequent visits to the region. He enjoys researching the variety of letterforms both ancient and modern, from temple inscriptions to hand-painted signs, and from palm-leaf manuscripts to daily newspapers. Collecting and documenting these resources provides a great deal of information about the ‘ecology’ of a writing system: how it relates to its neighbouring scripts, how different interpretations of letterforms are used in different environments, and how technology and cultural history have influenced the identity of the script. Getting to grips with this ‘ecology’ is crucial for understanding the script in its own terms, to build a better informed, more flexible framework for future type designs,
